We understand that being a student can be a very positive experience but it can also bring a variety of challenges.
Wellbeing
Community groups for mental wellbeing Our Community groups provide a supportive environment where you cand build a network learn and share new skills. Our social activities create a sense of belonging and reduce isolation. Themes will promote the African and Caribbean culture. There may be waiting times but we will organise what is known as an intake Interview to assess your request for counselling. Due to lockdown restrictions we are offering sessions by either Zoom or Microsoft teams.
Perinatal counselling
“Evidence has shown that between 10 and 20% of women develop a mental illness either during pregnancy or within the first year after having a baby. Women who experience disadvantages such as social exclusion or poverty are at a higher risk of developing perinatal depression. The risk of depression is twice as high for teenage mothers. - BACP We recognise that women from ethnic minority groups are at greater risk of developing mental health problems. Poor perinatal mental health impacts on maternal morbidity and mortality and can have a devastating impact on child and family wellbeing. Our services are designed to meet the unique needs of men and women from diverse backgrounds. This service help parents cope with the emotional turmoil of having a baby with emphasis on families living away from their support network.
What is counselling?Couple counselling
A chance for married couples and those in intimate personal relationships to find a way through their issues with an objective third party. This service is also for culturally diverse family units pe to help you see clearly what is currently happening in your relationship, to be clear about what you would like to be different, and to enable you to bridge the gap.
It’s dynamically different to one-to-one counselling because there are three people in the room, but it shares the same values: confidentiality, a code of ethics, and a focus on you and your needs. What it’s not about is the opinions or preferred outcomes of the counsellor.
